Seth Lakeman, Sheffield

(featuring Seth Lakeman)

Venue: Sheffield City Hall

Celebrated folk-inspired singer-songwriter and virtuoso fiddler Seth Lakeman has released six albums including 2005’s Mercury-nominated Kitty Jay and his latest album, Tales from the Barrel House which confirms Seth’s innate knack for writing both foot-stomping, sing-along songs and more tender, thoughtful ballads. His fiddle and tenor guitar playing is often breathtaking and Seth's trademark, soaring vocals are at the forefront of this album, as beguiling and haunting as ever.

Recorded at Morwellham Quay in Devon, Seth released ‘Tales From the Barrel House’ in April 2012. He has not only written, sung and played all the instruments on every track but he’s also recorded and mixed the whole album himself. Seth says he has enjoyed this recording project like no other.  "I've been really keen for some time to get right back to the basics of ‘Kitty Jay'.." (the £300 kitchen-table album that shot him to fame and won him a Mercury Music Prize nomination back in 2005).

Seth began his musical career early, playing music in his native Devon with his parents and two brothers. Later, the three brothers formed Equation with two female singers and signed to Time Warner 1995. After recording and touring the world Seth Lakeman left Equation in 2001 and has since gone on to enjoy considerable success as a solo artist.

He's now performed everywhere from Libya to Texas, as well as featuring on just about every major festival bill across the UK. In addition, Seth has toured extensively around Europe too where he’s also performed with Tori Amos. He recently played an extensive and hugely successful UK tour with his hugely talented band in October 2012 and is now announcing dates in 2013 in the UK and around the world.

In March 2012, Seth performed with the BBC Concert Orchestra for a very special concert at Plymouth Pavilions. Seth teamed up with Oscar-winning composer and arranger Anne Dudley to present a fresh new take on some of his most popular tracks and is releasing a 5 track live EP from the show in December 2012 – Seth Lakeman Live with the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Seth was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2005 for 'Kitty Jay'.  Multiple albums, tours and high-profile collaborations later, the acclaimed folk artist released his latest studio album The Granite Way in February on his own label, Honour Oak Records. It’s a collection of songs recorded alongside a group of longtime collaborators of Seth’s, staying true to his roots and referring to ancient stories that inspired early West Country storytelling.

Seth Lakeman: ‘Each song feels strongly connected through history to the moors and the sea. I had written the stories and songs beforehand and had the melodic tunes ready for us all to explore when we recorded in the room, and the musical interplay between this lineup really displays their appetite for sounds and subjects within the folk tradition.’

In recent years Seth was asked to record on Van Morrison’s album ‘Moving On Skiffle’ and he collaborated with Public Service Broadcasting. Seth has also previously worked, and toured extensively, with Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) with his band the Sensational Space Shifters.
