"I was always amazed with women that juggle family and business"
8 January 2019
Welcome to The Gig Cartel Blog. We’re very much looking forward to hosting your UK tour in May. Are you excited to return to our shores?
Very much so! We’ve been enjoying London for the few years now but a UK tour is long overdue.
Is this your most extensive UK headline tour to date?
I did a similar tour some years back with my 4 piece band, and I’m excited to be back and bring the horn section this time with the new album and many new tunes.
How does playing in Europe differ from playing stateside?
Every country has something new and different to offer- in the US they like outside festivals - they bring their lawn chairs and make it a family event. Club scene - they like to dance to the music and have a good time. Northern Europe is more about starting on time and listening.. In southern Europe concert doesn't even start before midnight.. it’s just great to be able to have a bit of both worlds and have a year of shows divided between a few continents.
How have you found the response to the release of ‘Like It On Top’ in 2018?
Wonderful! I think it’s the right time for such thematic on both sides of the ocean - women’s issues and empowerment seem to be the global theme nowadays and it’s nice when music follows in the same steps. The record was both on top of the Billboard and I-tunes charts in the US.
What inspired the album?
I was always amazed with women that juggle family and business and expectations of the society to be perfect and always give 100%. I do a ‘male job’ for now almost 20years and I have a huge support from my husband without whom I wouldn’t be able to do what I love- so I always wondered how is it for females that lead huge corporations and have so many employees under their wings and still manage to have a successful marriage and raise children. Or women in politics with huge responsibilities? Nowadays times are changing and it’s ok to have reversed work situation where a husband gives up his career in support of his partner.
Blues/Rock, American Funk, Soul… You incorporate a lot of styles into your music. What’s been on your own playlist this year, any tips for music fans?
Still love to hear some Steely Dan, Albert king, Tedeschi Trucks Band, John Mayer etcJust very eclectic. Both old and new sounds.
What’s your idea of the perfect day and night?
Spending creative time in my music room in the morning, family time in the afternoon and a great concert at night.
For anyone who is considering coming to see one of your live shows, what can they expect?
There’s a lot of different styles, but it’s all Ana Popovic sound. My music is guitar driven but based on funk, blues and soul grooves. I usually write music for a bigger band. Love writing horn charts. I love to feature each of my band members during the show as they are all fantastic musicians.
It’s a high energy entertaining show with cool tunes and great guitars.
