Johnny Winter & Band 2013
Blues as we know it today wouldn't be the same without Johnny Winter. The masterful guitarist from Texas taught the genre how to rock and actually attracted a white audience to the Blues in the first place, nothwithstanding the originators' sole claim to the style as "their" music. Winter continues to thrill old and young listeners alike since almost half a century, thus having a determining influence on the fact that the Blues is currently going through its umpteenth adolescence. Whether Jimi Hendrix and Rory Gallagher, both legends on their own, or youthful cats like Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Joe Bonamassa: the small man with the huge sound has influenced them all. Dozens of albums - collaborations with Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker, Bob Dylan and, of course, his brother Edgar amongst them - speak not only of a carreer, but an entire life in the sign of the Blues. In saying that you have to go through hardships in order to play this type of music authentically, Winter doesn't borrow a cliché. Born with albinism and addicted to drugs for decades, he is, above all, a survivor who may have become wiser, but surely not quieter - or to put it more exactly: The Grammy-awarded icon has probably never sounded better than today. After a series of health problems, a reborn Johnny is set to once more establish new standards on stage over the next few weeks.
