Dead String Brothers
The Boardwalk, Sheffield
venue info
It may be a surprise to hear the wistful Americana sounds of Detroit's Deadstring Brothers coming from a city better known for loud rock, but disillusionment can take many channels. Desolation, frustration and regret have always been present where great country music was played, and from its bombed-out inner city to its sterile suburbs, Detroit has its share. In their hometown, the Deadstring Brothers have shared the stage with acts ranging from Cat Power and Eleni Mandell to Jesse Malin, the Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash and Jesse Sykes. In March of 2003, the quintet was invited for a second time to play the prestigious SXSW music conference in Austin, Texas.

'Better than a Led Zeppelin re-union', is how the band are described in Kerrang! magazine. So much so, that even Zep singer Robert Plant came to one of Letz Zep's London shows 'To see how I was perceived in my heyday' Robert said in an interview in Q magazine. To see a gig by Letz Zep, is to experience the sights and sounds of Led Zeppelin back in the seventies.

John Otway & The Big Band
The Boardwalk, Sheffield
venue info
John first achieved notoriety with his eye-watering performance on Old Grey Whistle Test and subsequent hit single 'Really Free' in 1977. A heady mix of blind ambition and rank incompetence was to keep this microstar shining for almost two decades despite Otway's ability to turn any situation to his own disadvantage. His autobiography 'Rock and Roll's Greatest Failure' out sold, by a factor of ten, all the records he had released since his hit, and now Otway is struggling to live up to this billing - selling out London Astoria for his 2000th gig in 1993, filling the Royal Albert Hall in 1998, and charting at number 9 with his 2002 single 'Bunsen Burner'. For John 'Two Hits' Otway, 'the future's bright; the future's Otway!

Show of Hands
At The Lowry, Salford
venue info
Steve Knightley and Phil Beer are widely acknowledged as the finest acoustic roots duo in England. Knightley, who writes most of their inspired material and Beer, a dazzling multi instrumentalist, have built up a huge following which has seen them twice sell out the Albert Hall , headlining at major festivals from Glastonbury to WOMAD and playing all over the world, from Europe to America, Australia and India. Voted Best Live Act by the public at the 2004 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, the jury is still out on just what kind of music they play. A genre defying mix of rock, roots, blues, country, trad, and often influenced by the music of other countries, it is played out on an array of instruments from slide guitar to fiddle, mandolin to South American cuatro.

venue info
Steve Knightley and Phil Beer are widely acknowledged as the finest acoustic roots duo in England. Knightley, who writes most of their inspired material and Beer, a dazzling multi instrumentalist, have built up a huge following which has seen them twice sell out the Albert Hall and headlining at major festivals from Glastonbury to WOMAD. Voted Best Live Act in the 2004 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, the jury is still out on just what kind of music they play. A genre defying mix of rock, roots, blues, country, trad, and often influenced by the music of other countries, it is played out on an array of instruments from slide guitar to fiddle, mandolin to South American cuatro. 'Formidable operators in the roots arena. A class act' The Independent.
